Peter Orlovsky retrieves his brother Julius from a psychiatric hospital and starts on a journey with Allen Ginsberg. Unlike the spontaneity shown in Pull My Daisy, this movie is about the work processes that have to be set up in order to achieve a portrait of Julius. Unable to communicate, he remains in the background, this requires the set up of other strategies than the ones used for the making of a documentary. The leading role of this fringe character is reinvestigated by Joe Chaikin, the director of the Open Theater. The schizophrenia endured by the protagonist becomes a model that interlaces different levels of reality. The performance of the actor and the filmmaker are played out like a reflexive construction, both involved in the action and in the position of an observer.
