Froilan Orozco is an embalmer in a miserable little Colombian city. He dedicates his life to restoring a modicum of dignity to the victims of the daily brutality, offering the ultimate gift of compassion in a universe almost devoid of humanity. Contradictorily, the gesture is only applicable to the corpses of the dead. Tsurisaki addresses the subject without compromise. His camera acting as the eyes of the embalmer, the viewer follows his daily work without ever turning away from this repulsive, though banal, task. From this emerges a work of strength torn between its graphic horror and the kindness of the disillusioned man. Watching Orozco the Embalmer is grueling – some might think it unbearable – yet it confronts us with the last stage of our existence that cannot be ignored.
