I’ve been moved by this movie when I first watched it, back in 2001.
After several viewings, I came up with the idea of creating a dj set to suit the movie.
Of course, it may sound pretentious to remove what has been done by Philip Glass, who is, as all of us know, one of the best contemporary music composer and a master of minimalist genre.
The purpose of this set isn’t in any way a competition with Philip Glass’s music, which is entirely built with the pictures, but simply another interpretation, giving these awesome, unique scenes a different atmosphere. It shoudn’t be regarded as an inopportune invasion, just a way to emphasize the movie.
My LPs and I began this approach of Koyaanisqatsi in 2005, and we are still seeking because each day gives birth to new ideas, new recordings that can be used for this matter. Eventually, it’s in the depth of the aroused emotions that I try to add music capable of reaching this dimension, updating the images.
More than ever, we know that man has gone past limits clearly indicated by the movie, problem remaining : how to go back ? Or adopt a radically different behaviour… Hence the use of this film : show people the disaster in which we go deeper and deeper, and this for more than 40 years.
