    Panos Cosmatos - 2011 - Canada - English with French subs - 110' - HD - Website

1983. In the mysterious Arboria experimental laboratory works Dr. Nyle Barry, a seemingly tormented man. His favourite subject of study is Elena, a silent young woman incarcerated in a prison of light and gifted with an extraordinary psychic power that Barry manages to temper with a pyramid of glass.

When he was a child, the young Panos Cosmatos would look at the VHS covers of genre movies he was not allowed to watch: he would then imagine their content. A phantasmagorical and idealized content, which over time would become Beyond the Black Rainbow. Headstrongly putting on screen only what he would like to see, Cosmatos tackles his unique film by never making any compromise; the final product is a hypnotic motion picture with a strong 80s vibe, but also a resolutely modern work of art, steeped in a beautifully ethereal cinematography showcasing a slightly retro science-fiction setting, and a soundtrack by Jeremy Schmidt, whose compositions are reminiscent of John Carpenter and Tangerine Dream. The son of George Cosmatos (The Cassandra Crossing, Rambo 2), Panos Cosmatos follows a very surprising path, thus proving that cinematographic sensibilities are not hereditary.

Panos Cosmatos was born in Vancouver. The offspring of the union between the director of Tombstone and an abstract sculptor, he grows up in a creative universe that is fertile ground for developing artistic tendencies. His inspirations come from - among others - the writings of William Burroughs, the illustrations of Frank Frazetta and the electronic music of the 1980s. Movie-wise, After Hours and Evil Dead 2 are the ones to trigger his urge to become a director. Beyond the Black Rainbow is his first film. The next one should look like an album of Black Sabbath!
