Cult of Camp

Highlights from various genres that employ the exaggeration and exotica of the Camp aesthetic pay tribute to a sensibility that came into the world 45 year ago when in 1964 Susan Sontag published her famous essay, "Notes on Camp." The program contains rare historical film material from Jack Stevenson’s private archive and features some of the silver screen’s most outrageous movie stars from early Camp icon Maria Montez to Earth Kitt to Corinna Mura. Extremely entertaining as well as informative

Sweet Hawaiian Dreams (soundie)

- 1940 - 4'
With

A "soundie" short film from the early 40s. "Soundies" were 16mm song-and-dance films that played in the "visual jukeboxes" of the period - jukeboxes that had small movie screens built into them and instead of a record, they played 16mm film strips, so you could hear AND see your favorite acts. This is a romantic tribute to full moons and canoe rides conveys all the allure and romance that a Hawaiian dreamscape could possess.

Untitled Hawaiian Soundie

With

Another Hawaiian-themed Soundie, this one with a Big band beat, a wild dancer and some bizarre archival footage thrown in to confuse. Strange and exciting.

Babaloo (soundie)

Josef Berne - 1942 - 3'
With

Stars Corinna Mura as a gyrating guitar-slapping voodoo priestess in this tour-de-force of tropical exotica. Mura had a much more sedate song appearance in Rick’s Cafe in the Humphrey Bogart film, Casablanca.

I Changed My Sex (Trailer)

A production trailer to this Ed Wood-directed classic originally released as Glen or Glenda. Lots of roadhouse jazz music here and girls in bondage situations while Ed and Bela (Lugosi) appear in flashes on the screen.

Maria Montez

Technicolor trailer selection; a mini-tribute to the "high queen of camp", the American B-movie star, Maria Montez who made a series of garish, action-adventure B-movies for Universal Studio in the early 40s and was also known as "the Queen of Technicolor". She married Jean-Pierre Aumont in 1943 and when her career in America started to fade in the mid-40s, they moved to France where she starred in a number of films before she died in a bathtub (heart-attack) in 1951. The 6 Technicolor trailers are for films like White Savage, Gypsy Wildcat and Cobra Woman. (In issue 27, Winter 1962/63, of Film Culture Smith penned a landmark tribute to Montez entitled “The Perfect Film Appositeness of Maria Montez”).

Catwoman: Dressed To Kill

Catwoman: Dressed To KillCatwoman: Dressed To Kill

A complete episode (25 min) of the 1960's Batman TV series, staring the fabulous Blues singer, movie star and gay icon, Eartha Kitt, as the evil Cat-woman in a skin tight leather cat suit.

Eclipse Of The Sun Virgin

George Kuchar - 1967 - 10' - 16mm

A glowingly colorful burlesque of life, love and supper in the Bronx, with a guest appearance by the spectral presence of Catholic guilt.
