The discussion will be developed out of Jack Smith’s film work in order to raise questions related to camp. We will first be concerned with the interactions Jack Smith had to mass culture. We will analyse how the film-maker invests the spectacular dimension with the project of defining the territory of a counter-culture. To what extent the excess of the grotesque enables the construction of an identity ? We will finally end up the discussion with a confrontation between Jack Smith’s, Andy Warhol’s, Ron Rice’s and Ken Jacobs’ films. Moreover, what would today camp have become?
