In one of this year's main themes, 'Sonic Images / Ear Cinema', LUFF opens up new viewpoints on a form of musical expression which was first explored by Rusolo and Ruttmann in the early 20th century and later established by Pierre Schaeffer. The selected project takes the concept of 'Hearing without Seeing' into our body's deepest intimacy. What could be closer to a sonic image than the MRI technology?

Patricia Bosshard and Simon Grab have both had a MRI scan performed on them, and their completely opposite reactions have inspired this project, in which the audience experiences the sensations provided by soundwaves of unidendified origin and uncertain nature. Without being buried in some sort of virtual reality experience, the spectators are given time to explore their own reactions to and feelings.

The piece was based on and composed with the use of various MRI technicalities: radio frequencies, magnetic fields, pulses, breaks, moments of tension and relaxation, or the physical sensation caused by soundwaves. By exposing the audience to radio frequencies, its authors also raise the urgent issue of the electromagnetic fog in which we swim day after day.

Simon Grab (born 1971) is a musician and producer from Zurich, working in a wide range of musical contexts, from noise performance to West African or South American folk music. Patricia Bosshard (born 1965) is a violonist et composer from Lausanne. Her motto is to stay free, so that she has worked in fields as different as folk music, classical, jazz, experimental, and sound design (M2 underground music stations). http://www.patriciabosshard.net
